Robotics Classes
From simple machines to working robots, nothing is more fascinating than making a robot perform human-like tasks. We offer a wide variety of classes for all ages and levels of experience. Using LEGO® models and the amazing LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots we explore everything from basic pulleys and belts to computer programming, sensors and task creation. Kids will be engaged, challenged and inspired by these robots.
- Model Bots: Working Models with LEGO® Ages 6 & Up
- Explore Amazing Mechanisms LEGO® model robots featuring programmable motors and sensors. Learn about computers and basic engineering with pulleys, belts, levers, cams and patterns of movement. The Wild Animal theme engages students with a hungry alligator that has motion sensor that snaps its jaw shut, a roaring lion that has a motor that makes it sit up and down, and a flying bird that flaps its wings. And in the Soccer Theme there is a goal kicker and goalie. Students learn new vocabulary, problem solving and critical thinking. No robotics experience necessary for this class.
- Basic Bots: Introductory Robotics Ages 8-12
- Experience the intrigue of the amazing LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots. This class introduces robotics and basic computer programming concepts such as repeat loops, if/then statements and sensors. Students will program their robots in an interactive environment and conquer challenges such as the Wall Hugger, Water Bottle Terrain, Line Following, Table Sweeper and the ultimate Battling Bots contest. Students learn key science and math concepts, including percentages, fraction, forces and motion. No robotics experience necessary for this class. Robots are for use by students in class only.
- Green Bots: Renewable Energy Challenges with LEGO® Robotics Ages 8-14
- Explore real-world issues like renewable and solar energy with the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots. Students explore basic computer programming maneuvers and learn how to use the four main LEGO® sensors: light, ultrasonic, touch and sound. Apply these new skills to solve missions that simulate real-life engineering problems with the Green City Competition Mat. Students learn problem solving, social responsibility and collaboration in this unique class.
- Advanced Robotic Challenges Ages 9-14
- Learn even more about the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots. Students expand their computer programming skills and work with new sensors including a sound sensor and ultrasonic sensor. React to intruders, move objects to different locations, sting and intruder with a robot tail and see how the Battling Bots contest becomes more challenging as new skills develop. Key science and math concepts, including percentages, fraction, forces and motion, are reinforced as part of this exciting class. Robots are for use by students in class only.
- The Best Bots: Advanced Robotics II Ages 9-14
- Challenge the fundamental robotic skills learned in the Introductory Robotics or Roaring into Robotics class with the ultimate exploration of the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots. Program a robot with a bluetooth cell phone, build a walking bot, use new ultrasonic and sound sensors to react to movement and different sounds. Program the new servo motors for precise movement. Students can work in teams to build communication and collaboration skills. The possibilities and challenges are endless so this class can be taken multiple times.
